Distribution
The spider is widespread but locally distributed in Britain. It is widespread in north-western and central Europe.

Habitat and ecology
Like the much more common R. lividus, this is a ground living spider. It is found in very similar situations to R. lividus e.g. under stones and in leaf litter. It has been found in various habitats including wetland, woodland and high moorland. In southern England, there is possibly some suggestion that the species may be more frequent on calcareous soils. Both sexes may be mature throughout the year, but most adults occur in late summer and autumn.

Status
Generally an uncommon species, records for which show a long-term decline, particularly in northern England and southern Scotland.

Threats
Given the relatively broad habitat requirements of this species, the apparent recent decline is difficult to explain.

Management and conservation
Although research is required to determine the reasons for the apparent recent decline of this species, preventing destruction of woodland and wetland habitats will certainly be beneficial.
